E-news: Novel and effective treatment for menopausal hot flushes

Barton et al describe a novel, effective and well tolerated treatment for menopausal hot flashes.

They conducted a phase III placebo controlled trial of citalopram, the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor usually used as a treatment for depression.

Doses as low as 10mg a day were associated with a 50% reduction in the frequency of flushes, and a dose of 20mg had the most beneficial effects on quality of life indicators. Furthermore, no significant adverse effects were reported within the trial.
