E-news: A potential new marker for Conn's syndrome

Nakamura et al describe a small but potentially useful study to help differentiate the cause of Conn's syndrome.

They have developed a new sensitive assay for 18-oxo-cortisol and examined this in adrenal venous samples from 14 patients with unilateral adenomas, and 7 with confirmed bilateral adrenal hyperplasia.

The ratio 18-oxo: cortisol was significantly higher in adenoma patients. Further work will aim to determine whether peripheral samples can yield similarly useful information.
