E-news: Adiponectin activates AMPK and influences onset of puberty

Serum adiponectin decreases throughout puberty. Wen et al investigated its effect on hypothalamic KISS1 gene transcription (the upstream signal of GnRH).

Adiponectin activated AMPK in hypothalmic GT1-7 neurones, so decreasing translocation of SP1 from cytoplasm to nucleus and repressing promoter activity and transcription of KISS1.

This is the first experimental evidence for the characterisation of reproductive regulation by adiponectin, and for involvement of AMPK and SP1 pathways.
